Although I did not attend grade 12 at Westgate, I appreciate being included in the upcoming class reunion. Wow, 50 years have gone by so quickly but as I reflect on the many stages of my life, it covers a lot of ground! I went to work in a local hardware store after grade 11, but was sent up to the office to help out when things were a little slow in the store. This quickly brought me to the conclusion that was what I wanted to do for a living, so I enrolled in basic bookkeeping and general office practice at Red River Community College. I married my high school sweetheart, Arno Jansen, in 1966 and worked in an office for five years before we started our family. I enjoyed being a stay at home mom for nine wonderful years. I went back to work in 1979 and got my license as an insurance broker and worked at that for another 9 years. Both of our sons, Aldin & Kurt, attended Westgate and I served on the Westgate board for several years. During this time I was hired as an administrative assistant at Westgate, where I worked for another 11 years. When Arno was offered an early retirement package from the University of Manitoba, I also resigned my position and we moved out to a hobby farm in the Whitemouth area. I worked with H & R Block as a tax preparer for two tax seasons, and then worked in another accounting office doing general bookkeeping for two more seasons before I finally came to terms with retirement. In retirement, I have served as treasurer for many organizations. Then we became grandparents! Five grandchildren in five years! Both our sons lived out of province until last year, when Aldin & his family moved back to Winnipeg. Kurt and his family are living in Montreal, and I have become a frequent flyer!
