9 Outdoor Education

Outdoor experiential learning is one of the defining characteristics of Westgate’s approach to holistic education. We want to foster an appreciation for creation and nature in students, while equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully and safely navigate age appropriate activities. During Alternative Education Week, grade 9 students go to Rushing River Provincial Park in Ontario. Students complete basic canoe training, explore the beautiful park, and cook food in student food groups. Experienced Westgate campers have the opportunity for leadership, especially in welcoming new students into the camping experience.  While this is not a credit, it is a key part of our Westgate curriculum.
