Westgate has initiated a trip to South America in order to study some world history from an area that is often not studied, and to connect with and understand other cultures, especially our Mennonite “cousins” in Paraguay. Our grade 11’s and 12’s have the opportunity to travel to Peru and hike the Inca Trail and visit Macchu Picchu. This trip involves a four day hike through the Andes, and offers a number of opportunities to explore ancient Incan history and local experiences. We also travel to Paraguay, and have fostered a connection with a Mennonite school in the city of Filadelfia, and our students have been hosted by students from that school. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the lives of their counterparts. This offers insights into aspects of Mennonite history that will be studied in class. Other highlights of the trip may include a visit to the Jesuit missions of eastern Paraguay on the way to see the Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina.
